In determining the value of an aircraft, there are a myriad of factors to consider. After establishing the basic value of the aircraft, the specification can be considered. The engine manufacturer and variant are particularly important with the thrust being an essential element. Where a small proportion of an aircraft fleet is powered by one particular manufacturer – the RB211 on the B767 for example – this can result in a considerable discount. Particularly on widebodies, the engine manufacturers have introduced a number of variants with the latest offering greater efficiency and reliability. A higher engine thrust permits better airport performance and allows for a higher aircraft weight. However, operating an engine at higher thrusts on a regular basis can increase the wear and tear on components and necessitate an earlier than expected overhaul.
