The B717 is facing new market realities due to the Covid Event. For so many years the vulnerability of the type was masked by the appetite from one or two operators but no longer. The veil has been lifted and the real level of demand in terms of the wider market – ie little or none – revealed. The retirement by Delta signals an end of an era for a type that could have been so much more but was eliminated as soon as Boeing took over McDonnel Douglas. Production of the MD95 which was renamed the B717 only persisted after the takeover because of the difficulty in cancelling supplier contracts.
