Aircraft Asset Assessment — B787-8

November 22, 2021

Market Presence. Following issues with the B737MAX, the FAA and Boeing identified issues with the B787 that has seen deliveries being halted during 2021. As of November 2021, deliveries had yet to restart. The FAA has been focused on production quality issues at Boeing over the B787. Boeing may also face some financial penalties for delayed deliveries, depending on contracts, including the possibility of cancellations. Fabrication of the B787 horizontal stabilizer saw some components being clamped with greater force than specified, which could result in improper gap verification and shimming. Boeing indicated in August 2021 that airlines had removed eight B787s from service as a result of two distinct manufacturing issues in fuselage sections and that some aircraft have shims that are not the proper size.
