The development of the B747-8I improved the operating economics of the type but with the move towards twins and a changing market structure this was not enough to induce replacement orders for the -400. There is little to commend the -8I and the availability of such an aircraft on the used market will not result in much interest. The aircraft has been facing problems in terms of values and lease rentals for many years and the Covid Event precipitated the collapse of both. Some sale and leasebacks took place but lessors planned for a full payout during the initial lease with the scrapping thereafter. The preference is for lease extensions rather than having to deal with a return.
