Aircraft Asset Assessment

November 23, 2009

Market Presence. The -300 represented a means for Boeing to stimulate new sales of the B747 during the development of the much more versatile -400 while also validating the concept of the stretched upper deck. Today the -300 has moved away from being a niche to a marginalized aircraft. The range of the -300 makes it ideally suited to routes involving the North Atlantic and regional Asian routes. Unfortunately, traffic densities are not what they once were and filling the aircraft with sufficient high yielding passengers is proving difficult. As a Combi the type retains some credibility. The carriage of freight in the rear of the aircraft perhaps generates greater revenues than the transportation of economy passengers flying on heavily discounted fares. The availability of newer equipment has played a role in eclipsing the -300.
